1 Some success in spite of power outage on Thu Jun 23, 2011 11:47 am

Well I had some good news last night. I had my last fertile eggs in
the incubator with an expected hatch day of yesterday. Well on Friday
at about 5:00 PM while we were in Saskatoon the power went out. We did
not get home until about 7:30 and the incubator temp. had dropped into
the very low 90's. We got some hand and foot warmers that Gail uses
when we go ice fishing and put them in the incubator and covered it as
we just have a Hova Bator table top. Temp actually dropped as low as
88 and then recovered and held at about 92 until the power came back on
at about 11:30. I expected that all was lost but we put the eggs into
the hatcher on Sunday and hoped. About 7:00 last night the first egg
started to pip and then a second, and a third and a fourth. By bed time
we had two turkeys out and when I got up this morning we had 4 turkeys
and 1 guinea. We only had 10 turkey and 3 guinea eggs in this hatch
so we have half the turkeys (and one pipping now) and 1/3 of the guineas.
Considering what has happened to them I am very pleased with close to
a 50% hatch this time.

Time to go buy a generator so that this does not happen again.

Congratts on your hatch, glad you got something.
We are looking at a whole farm generator, just pricing them out now. So much to lose if you have a bunch of eggs/chicks and the power goes out. We have had 2 really bad outages this year, one as 10 hours another was 7. The first was on the coldest day of the year too...

Power outages are so frustrating, not to mention stressful. And doesn’t it just always have to happen when you have eggs incubating or really young chicks that need heat. We are going to be investing in a generator soon ourselves and hopefully some kind of solar power in the future. I’m glad you had a decent hatch despite it.

My bator with 150 pea eggs was down last night as well if you are not home a generator will not be of use, I think I am ok even though one of the bators was down to 70,
