1 Peahen laying eggs? on Mon Jun 20, 2011 8:51 pm

I have a peahen who just turned one year. About a month ago I bought a year old peacock. They have been living in bliss together for a couple or weeks or so now. Yesterday and today I notice the hen hiding behind their shelter so tonight I chased her out and lo and behold she has laid four eggs! So this has me wondering if they could possibly be fertile. I didn't think a year old peahen could lay eggs.

So all you peafowl people, Please educate me on this. . .

Pea hens can lay at one year BUT peacocks must have eye feathers to reproduce so if your male has eye feathers it is kore than a year old

Are these eggs from a peahen with a male that you purchased from me at my sale? If so, unfortunately the eggs wont be fertile. But if you have incubator space, or she wants to set on them, let her try.

(I think it was you that got the Black Shoulder Peacock yearling from me???)

They will jot be fertile if the cock has no eye feathers but they may be if he has some, if she wants to sit let her I have about 20 sitting now all over the place and they can be good mothers.

I did buy him from you at your sale Ty and he has no tail at all. I was shocked at the eggs because I thought I had read that they won't lay until two years.

So, another dumb question. Since the eggs are not fertile if she wanted to set on them will she sit indefinitely since they will never hatch? She hasn't gone back to them since I disturbed her.

So, what would happen if I gave her a few chicken eggs? Would she hatch them? Would she look after the chicks?
