Tomorrow or tonight I am going to fire up the Octagon 40 I got last fall.

I'm just wondering what everyone uses to check their humidity with? My incubator doesn't have a readout. I just have a spot check thermometer.

Last year, I bought a couple little exo-terra humidity meters from Petland to stick in it, but I don't think they are very accurate. Seemed that I had stuck chicks even though the meters said it was with in range.

So, What do you guys use?

I'm heading to town latter this morning and want to pick something up.

Oh, and does Cbotkin (Brinsea) have something? I have the the Spot Check Thermometer, and really like it.

Oh Silkie, I have an electronic thermometer/hygrometer one, it appears to be accurate. Have you seen pictures of it in my incubator that I have posted? I'm going to put a picture in here so you can see. It really works well I am pretty sure of. I don't know if you can get one, but I have had it years and it works like a hot dam, I love it. Think it was about $20 at a poultry supply place, a good investment, I thought. Look for the picture, good luck, and have a most wonderful day, CynthiaM.

This was taken some time ago, humidity was too low I see. They were obviously in the "laying on the side, not turning" stage, humidity should have been higher, and the temperature fluctuated from 99.5 to 100.1, all good, they are so accurate. Hope this helps. It is good cause I can set the unit anywhere that I choose in the sportsman, works awesome.

Thank you, Cynthia!

I went and bought a National Geographic Brand one. It gives a temperature read out as well as humidity. Battery Powered.

I was surprised to see that the humidity in my house read 48%, yet the humidity in the incubator is reading only 31%. I would have thought that the humidity would be higher in the incubator. I have both slots filled with water, and the vent is closed to where it is supposed to be. Strange...

I learned this interesting fact about "relative humidity" from a piano tech last week. Its about temperatures and humidity. The warmer the air, the more saturated the air has potential to be. Cooler air can only hold a fraction of the humidity that warm air can, and so this is why in the winter it can be pouring rain, and the air is still dry outside, but that same air, if brought inside at a warmer temperature would become much damper...ok this is sounding much better in my head before I try to explain it hahaha...basically your humidity reading is affected by temperature. Your air in the bator has the potential to be much more humid that your house air because its warmer...blah blah blah haha. I tried Wink

I have this Zilla model, which I do not recommend. It worked ok the first year, but has not held up very well with use.

I was thinking of replacing it with this one. I like the idea of just the probe being inside the incubator, instead of the entire unit. And the price is right too.

Silkie, do you have a link to the National Geographic model you bought?

I don't have the package any more. It was about $19. I got it at Walmart. The temperature is showing same as my Spot Check Thermometer.

I got my Spot Check Thermometer from C.botkin (Brinsea). I love it, but it doesn't show humidity.

I placed it in a corner, sort of on top of the eggs where I can see it through the lid of the incubator. I also have my spot check poking up in there too.

Ok, thanks for the pics. Smile I've heard great things about the Brinsea spot-check thermometers.

That's a mighty fine (and full) looking incubator you have there... Razz
