Wow he looks like he has some good size. Good thick set of legs on him and nice clean barring! You will be showing him in december I hope Smile

They look great Miry. I'm enjoying watching mine grow out that I got from you. Thanks for the pics.

He looks like a nice, big boy. Smile I've heard of hens with spurs but never seen any. Watch out roosters! Laughing

Haha, I love the last pic with the two roos along the fence line desperately wanting in. So denied! Razz

They are such a striking breed Miry!
I wonder why more people don't keep these birds. You sure have some nice birds!

Thanks KRL, I do admire them...They are quite a flashy breed and love to strike a pose.
In contrast to the very docile Buckeyes and the Rocks they are much more agile and always the first to get on the high perches. I feel like they still have a lot of the natural instincts that old type fowl would have needed to have survived.

They are just not that common anywhere anymore although there has been a bit of a revival in the US. When they seperated them into Dominiques (with the rose combs) and the Plymouth Barred Rocks (with the single comb) they kind of disappeared.
Lots of info on them at www.dominiquechicken.com and Dominique Club of America website.

I have admired this breed of bird before and thought one day I would love to have a flock of them at my place, they are lovely. I also looked at the Dominique Poultry Club site that you linked and will have more reading to do. I have an interest in this breed, that perhaps one day may obtain some hatching eggs from you, Mirycreek. For now, I will admire the breed. I love my two barred Plymouth rocks I have, but I think I like the Dominique even more, I fancy those rose combed birds over a single combed birds. Lovely looking cockerel by the way, perhaps he will be very promising, as you so state. Good. Have a wonderful and awesome day, CynthiaM.

I almost think I could give up raising cochins for this breed, but very much sitting on that fence for sure, smiling that big smile.

They are lovely birds.
It would be interesting to put a partridge chantecler over the hens for a sexlink cross. They would be very pretty birds with lots of good qualities I think. And that flat comb that I have begun to love. No more standard combs for me.
Have you tried any of your buckeye cockerels over them? I bet they would be pretty cool too.

I will try to get some more pics up here, I have some that have turned out quite nice this year, unfortunately the one cockerel I thought had the most promise ended up without the tail angle I was looking for but still a beautiful bird, he has gone on to another home...
Yes i would love to put a Buckeye rooster over some Dominique hens but kind hard to convince chantecler_eh? there that it would be a good idea! (hes a bit of a purist Im afraid!) Laughing Laughing
Actually we were just so busy hatching large numbers of our purebreds this year, never seemed to have room in the incubators or pens for our "designer" breeds...maybe 2012 will be the year for some fun!

This guy was my first pick early in the year but unfortunately his legs never grew much and he ended up looking very short compared to the others...

You can see him in front here with the yellow bands in comparison to the one directly behind him (green band) who I prefer over him.
I like his very upright posture and the steeply sloping back of the geen banded fellow.

i also like the one in the far back (he has blue bands)I will post a more recent pic of him here later...

Here is a better shot of the sloping back guy (he has the green band)
Unfortunately I don't like his tail as well..even though he is older now, he doesn't have the really full tail I would like to see in a Dominique although he has a very nice high chest..
